TAP AND GO.

Move customers through the transaction faster by accepting NFC. Customers simply hold their device near the reader to initiate payment. Upon terminal verification, the process is complete.

DIP IT.

EVM, known as 'chip cards' are the new standard in payment cards. Chip cards are inserted into the reader, then left in place for the duration of the sale.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CHIP CARDS.

U.S. banks are switching up the insides of your customers’ credit cards. They’re adding something called EMV technology, which stands for “Europay, MasterCard, and Visa.” Debit and credit cards will be equipped with a small computer chip that’s extremely hard to counterfeit. If you’ve gotten a card recently, chances are it has this technology.

THE NATIONWIDE SWITCH TO CHIP CARDS.

What’s up with this 'liability shift' everyone is talking about?

Starting on October 1st 2015, should a customer pay with an EMV chip card and you are not able to process "the chip" but swipe the card instead, your business is automatically liable for any chargebacks or fraud that may arise from that particular transaction. For example, a fraudster buys $14 worth of coffee for himself and a friend and you swipe his chip card instead of processing the chip, he could call his credit card issuer, claim he was not at your location and the $14 would be removed from your account...No questions asked!

THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IS THE LAST MAJOR MARKET WHERE BUSINESSES PRIMARILY USE MAGNETIC-STRIPE CARDS.

  • U.S. makes only 24% of all credit card sales and is responsible for nearly 50% of fraud worldwide.
  • U.S. has had the most card fraud in the world for the last 5 years in a row.
  • U.S. card fraud losses soared over $5 billion, up 14.5% in the last year.
  • Magnetic stripe cards have 'static data' and can be easily cloned.
  • Chip cards use a new encryption for every sale, making sales more secure.

EMV 'CHIP CARD' FAQ

What will switching my business to EMV cost me?

Here's where First Nationwide Payments steps in. We provide EMV compliant terminals that are surprisingly affordable and simple to setup. We strongly  suggest the Clover Family Point Of Sale devices which, out of the box, easily support EMV.

Do you swipe chip cards the same way as magnetic stripe cards?

It's a completely new operation.  Don't fret its very simple.  Insert the card into the payment device's slot for the entire transaction.  Once the transaction is complete take the card out.  Here is the breakdown:.

  1. Insert the card into the slot, usually the bottom of the terminal. The card should be facing up and inserted chip-first.
  2. At this point, it’s important to remember to keep the card inserted until the transaction is complete.
  3. The terminal will recognize the card, and the transaction will continue.
    • If the CVM is Chip-and-PIN, the customer will input his or her PIN before pressing enter.
    • If the CVM is Chip-and-Signature, then there will be no prompt.
    • If there is no CVM, there will also be no prompt.
  4. Following any required customer input, the transaction will be processed.
  5. Upon completion, a receipt will print, which may or may not require a signature, depending on your terminal.
  6. Your customer is now free to remove the card.

Is this new cutting edge technology?

No. Almost all of the world, including Europe and Asia have been using chip cards for years now.

Will People Still Be Able to Swipe Their Cards?

Yes. Initial EMV cards will still be equipped with magnetic stripes so that they can be used at locations that haven’t yet migrated to EMV.

Which Type Will Be Used in the United States?

Initially, the vast majority of EMV transactions in the U.S. will be verified using Chip-and-Signature. This is because many issuers have decided not to offer EMV credit cards with PINs due to concerns about adjusting consumer behavior too abruptly. Most PIN-verified transactions are likely to come from international customers, at least initially. So if you operate your business in a tourist-heavy area, be mindful that your equipment should accept Chip-and-PIN transactions.
